The plastic problem

The fertilizer aisle is a plastic aisle

Walk down the fertilizer section of any garden center. Plastic bottles of liquid concentrate. Plastic bags of granular fertilizer. Plastic-coated slow-release beads that remain in your soil indefinitely. Even the options marketed as gentler ship in plastic containers.

Only about 9 percent of all plastic ever produced has been recycled. The rest sits in landfills, in oceans, and increasingly in soil. source

Gardening is not exempt. An estimated 500 million plastic pots, trays, and flats are produced in the United States every year, and roughly 5 percent are recycled. source Plastic-coated fertilizer adds more: researchers who sampled nineteen fields found coating fragments in every one, and the EU is removing microplastic-containing fertilizers from its market from October 2028. BioPod's shell is biodegradable cellulose that dissolves in seconds and leaves zero residue. The packaging uses compostable materials. From the pod to the pouch, there is nothing to throw away and nothing left behind.

The shell story

Three materials before we found the right one

The founder tested three shell material categories through hands-on, bench-scale experimentation, holding each to the same standard she applies to materials in her research.

PVA film: rejected. It dissolves impressively, but PVA is a petroleum-derived polymer, and dissolving is not the same as biodegrading. The science on its full breakdown is still debated. We are not claiming it is harmful; we decided a debated polymer was not something to put into living soil.

Plant-starch shells: rejected. Premature degradation in high humidity made shelf life unviable.

Biodegradable cellulose paper: selected. Made from FSC-sourced wood pulp fibers. Fully biodegradable, dissolves in 30 to 90 seconds when watered, and passes all five criteria: soil safety, moisture stability, shelf life, cost, and biodegradability.
